candidate interviews

ChatGPT-4o, the latest iteration of ChatGPT, can help you at each stage of the candidate interviews process to assess mutual alignment and make the most out of the time you spend talking to the candidate. This post will explore the advantages of using ChatGPT-4o to improve your candidate experience and optimize the interview process, both for you and for them.

Why use ChatGPT-4o for candidate interviews?

Released by OpenAI in May, ChatGPT-4o is available for all ChatGPT Plus users. This advanced model builds on GPT-4, offering improved intelligence and faster output, making it ideal for AI-driven candidate assessment

With GPT-4o, you can interact with ChatGPT in real-time conversations, making ChatGPT a powerful interview helper. It will respond to the natural tone and inflections in your speech as if you were talking with a person. Real-time video interactions, while not publicly available, are still in development.

Here’s how using GPT-4o can improve your candidate interview process.

1. Enhanced multimodal capabilities

ChatGPT-4o can process and generate responses from text and audio inputs. By uploading documents and photos, it can interpret resumes and spoken responses, providing a comprehensive candidate review. This multimodal AI in recruitment streamlines the interview process, making it more efficient and effective.

For example, you can upload a candidate’s LinkedIn profile and resume and then have it listen in on your conversation with the candidate as it takes notes.

2. Real-time conversational abilities

You can now talk to ChatGPT and it will respond almost as quickly as in a human conversation. ChatGPT-4o supports interactive voice exchanges with minimal latency, providing real-time interview feedback during candidate interviews. If you have ChatGPT-4o listen in on your candidate interviews, it can provide real-time feedback and responses to help provide a smooth and natural interview flow.

3. Customized interview question generation

ChatGPT-4o excels at analyzing candidate resumes and cover letters. By uploading these documents, you can generate personalized interview questions targeting specific skills and experiences relevant to the job. This ensures targeted and effective evaluations, enhancing the interview preparation process.

This way, you can manage large volumes of applications and make a shortlist of candidates you can give your individual attention to.

4. Enhanced feedback mechanisms

You can use ChatGPT-4o to bring all this information together – the candidate application materials and the transcription of your conversation – to make a post-interview assessment of the candidate. It can understand the key strengths they bring to the role and areas for improvement, and share these with the candidate to help them better prepare for future interviews.

How to use ChatGPT-4o for your candidate interviews

Using ChatGPT-4o’s real-time conversational abilities can make your interview process more efficient, your candidate evaluations more effective, and your feedback more personalized and helpful. Here are some ways optimizing interviews with ChatGPT-4o can help you find better candidates in less time, along with some best practices for using ChatGPT-4o’s new features.

1. Resume screening and candidate shortlisting

HR professionals can use ChatGPT-4o to analyze different types of candidate input like resumes, cover letters, and spoken responses recorded on video. This gives you a better sense of who the candidate is as a person and what they bring to the table before you arrange to speak with them on a video call and chat.

ChatGPT Prompt: Analyze the candidate’s resume and provide feedback on their skills and experience.

2. Real-time follow-up questions

When you arrange to meet with the candidate for a video call or in-person interview, ChatGPT-4o can provide instant feedback and follow-up questions based on how the conversation is going.

To do this, press the headphone icon on the bottom right corner of ChatGPT’s chat interface and wait for it to load. Then, instruct ChatGPT to listen to the back-and-forth between you and the candidate, and prepare follow-up questions based on what the candidate tells you.

ChatGPT Prompt: Act as an executive assistant. I’m interviewing a candidate for a software developer position. The candidate, whose name is John Doe, will respond to me, and I’d like you to prepare relevant follow-up questions for the end of the interview. Do not stop recording until I tell you to. Here is the first question.

It’s important to note that while ChatGPT-4o can analyze both visual and audio data, it can’t do both simultaneously. It’ll be able to capture your voices, but not your gestures or facial expressions.

Cache Merrill, Founder and CEO of Zibtek, says that a good way to get around this limitation is to have candidates pre-record their answers to their application or interview questions.

“That way, you can process both audio and visual aspects of the recording and combine the data later,” says Merrill. “Though I still think a “live” interview element is invaluable, it could be a great way to kick off the interview process and pull some richer candidate data.”

3. Customized interview question generation

You can use ChatGPT-4o to help you do your homework on a candidate, and make interview questions specifically tailored to them and their work experience. That way, you can make sure that any questions you ask are relevant and specific to the role.

In this example, you’re preparing for an interview with a candidate for a data analyst position. You have a job description and the candidate’s resume. You can upload the resume to ChatGPT and generate questions based on specific criteria for the role e.g.data visualization, statistical analysis, and SQL skills.

ChatGPT Prompt: Act as a recruiter. Please make 10 personalized interview questions for the candidate, whose resume is attached. Make the questions focused on data visualization, statistical analysis, and SQL. Here is the job description: [INSERT JOB DESCRIPTION].

4. Give personalized interview feedback

When the interview is over and you need to decide whether the candidate makes it to the next stage, you can give ChatGPT-4o the list of their responses and provide detailed feedback, including their strengths and areas for improvement.

That insight enables you and your hiring team to make a better, more informed decision about how the candidate measures up and provides constructive feedback. It can also give you as an HR professional a deeper understanding of how they performed, and help them better prepare for future opportunities. That leads to a better hiring experience for both you and the candidate.

Enhance your recruitment process with AI

Using ChatGPT-4o’s more advanced multimodal input and real-time conversational abilities, you can make an airtight interview preparation process. Your interviews will be engaging, targeted, and supportive for the candidates you interview. Using GPT-40’s customized feedback, you can make an informed hiring decision and choose the right candidate for the role.

ChatGPT-4o can be just one of the AI tools you use to smooth out your interview preparation. The new Workable Screening Assistant feature reduces the time it takes you to screen candidates by 89%. Learn how to get better interview outcomes with Workable AI.
