How Workable’s MCP server grew to 94 tools (and why that matters for recruiting and HR teams)

When we launched the Workable MCP Server, the feedback we got back was immediate and pretty clear: people wanted more. Teams were already asking their AI assistant to do things we hadn’t built for yet. So we built them.
The Workable MCP Server now covers 94 tools across the full hiring and HR lifecycle, up from the original set that shipped with the initial release. That expansion adds 37 new tools spanning performance reviews, employee search, candidate management, member administration, and job lookup. Most of them are available to every Workable customer, on every plan, at no added cost.
What is the Workable MCP Server?
The Workable MCP Server connects AI assistants directly to a company’s live Workable data using the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for giving conversational AI access to external tools and real-time data.
In practice, this means an AI assistant like Claude (from Anthropic) or ChatGPT (from OpenAI) can read from and write to Workable without any manual exports, copy-paste steps, or switching between tabs. The AI assistant becomes a direct interface to the platform.
The original release covered jobs, candidates, pipeline stages, and offers. The expanded server extends that access to the rest of the platform.
What the 37 New Tools Cover
Advanced Candidate Search
Multi-field candidate queries across every open job, with selectable columns, filters, and sorting. Searches chain directly into full candidate profiles, so an AI assistant can find and surface exactly who you are looking for without anyone touching a filter panel. Available on Premier+ and Enterprise plans.
Advanced Employee Search
The same search depth applied to HRIS employee data, with full permission awareness. If a manager only has access to their own team’s records, that boundary holds inside the AI session too. Available on Premier+ and Enterprise plans.
Performance Reviews (15 Tools)
This is the largest single addition: a 15-tool suite covering the complete review cycle. That includes discovering active review cycles, filling out review forms, submitting reviews, sharing results, and signing off. An HR leader can walk through an entire performance review workflow in conversation with an AI assistant, without opening the platform once.
Profile Updates Reporting
Search and surface employee profile changes across a defined period. Useful for auditing what changed, when, and for whom.
Member Management
Invite new account members, update roles, deactivate users, and reactivate them when needed. Administrative tasks that used to require navigating settings pages can now be handled through an AI prompt.
Candidate Write Tools
Update candidate profiles directly and revert disqualifications without going back into the platform. Useful for correcting errors or moving candidates back into an active pipeline.
Job Search
Locate any job by partial title and retrieve the shortcode needed for downstream actions. A small tool, but one that unlocks a lot of chaining with other tools.
How Permissions Work Inside an MCP Session
Every session is scoped to the authenticated user’s existing role and access within Workable. An AI assistant operating through the MCP Server cannot see or act on anything the user is not already authorized to access, whether that is recruiting data, employee records, or account settings.
This applies across both the ATS and HRIS sides of the platform. No data is shared beyond what the individual user’s permissions allow.
What This Looks Like in Practice
A few examples of what an HR leader or recruiter can now do through an AI assistant:
-
Pull every profile update logged over a given period and review the list in conversation
-
Walk through an open performance review cycle, fill in forms, and submit, without touching the platform
-
Search for candidates across multiple open jobs using combined filters, then pull full profiles for the best matches
-
Add a new team member to Workable and assign their role, entirely through a prompt
-
Find a specific job by partial title and trigger downstream actions using its shortcode
These are not edge cases. They are tasks recruiting and HR teams handle every day.
Setup and Availability
The expanded Workable MCP Server is available now to all Workable customers. Most new tools are included at no additional cost on every subscription plan. Advanced Candidate Search and Advanced Employee Search are available on Premier+ and Enterprise plans.
Setup takes a few minutes: users add a custom connector in their AI assistant of choice and authenticate through OAuth2. No developer involvement is required and there are no API keys to manage.
