How to find email addresses with Boolean search strings
Looking for contact details of passive candidates is one of recruiting’s biggest challenges. Boolean search can help recruiters find email addresses on Google. Experiment with our Boolean search string for email addresses and modify them to build your own email finder.
Build generic Boolean search strings
Imagine you want to source a Java Developer. Look for resumes online by modifying a generic string:
(intitle:resume or intitle:cv) “Java developer” Chicago (Illinois OR IL)
You can also find profiles on social media, by modifying this generic string:
site:github.com “joined on” “Java developer” Chicago
Get more relevant results and reduce false positives, by adding:
- -job -jobs -sample -examples, to avoid irrelevant results
- (“Java developer” OR “Java programmer”) to cover variations of the same job title
You will find many resumes and profiles with these strings. You can contact those candidates through their social profiles or use Boolean search to look them up on job board candidate databases. But, having their email address would be more useful.
When sourcing EU candidates, please refer to guidance on using social media for recruiting and collecting candidate information as per the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR.
